Best Organic Crib Mattress Buying Guide

Organic Crib Mattress

An organic crib mattress is a healthy choice since baby breathes in air while sleeping in the crib

When you buy a crib mattress for your baby, you should consider buying an organic crib mattress. Although an organic crib mattress can be pricey, you will be surprised to find out that a non-organic mattress can be toxic and release toxic chemicals into the air.  Even an organic crib mattress can contain unsafe materials. One study from University of Texas found that crib mattresses made from either polyurethane foam or polyester foam had more than 30 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) off-gassing from them. Also, they identified that VOC levels were significantly higher in a sleeping infant’s breathing zone compared to other parts of the house. (Read more about this study.)

The manufacturer can advertise their mattress as an organic crib mattress, however, that doesn’t mean it is 100% organic. They may have just added some portion of the mattress with organic material and call that mattress an organic crib mattress.  When you research an organic crib mattress, you want to see two things in the mattress to ensure if the materials used are non-toxic.

Mattress Inside Filling Material – Most crib mattresses use Polyurethane foam as a filling material. Polyurethane foam is made from petroleum. It emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is highly flammable.  Some mattresses claim their filling is soybean foam. However, soybean foam is not much better than Polyurethane foam because the mattress will still have polyurethane foam filling mostly. Then only very small portion of soy bean foam is used as a filling and the mattress can be called a soy bean foam mattress.
Polyurethane foam is also highly flammable. In order to meet federal government standards for fire flammability, manufacturers have to add flame retardant chemicals to Polyurethane. These flame retardant chemicals are also very harmful to health.

Mattress Waterproof Cover – Most crib mattresses have a vinyl (polyvinyl chloride or PVC) covering for waterproof. If the mattress doesn’t have a waterproof covering, the mattress can get bacteria, mold or mildew over time. Therefore, many parents look for crib mattresses that have waterproof covering.
PVC is the most toxic plastic and will off-gas toxic chemicals into the surrounding air. On top of that, since PVC is hard plastic, it has chemical plasticizers added to make it soft. Usually phthalates is used as plasticizers and it is known to be very toxic to our health. Babies can breathe in plasticizers and absorb them through their skin. They can have reproductive harm, asthma, early onset of puberty, cancer, kidney and liver damage as a result. Phthalates is so harmful, thus, US has banned using some of them.  However, manufacturers use other alternatives to phthalates and they could be just as harmful.

Alternative to Toxic Materials

When you buy a baby crib mattress, look for a mattress with certified organic materials for both inside filling and outer padding or covering. If the material is not organic, it will have harmful chemicals that can effect the health of your baby. Conventional cotton, for example, is heavily sprayed with pesticides. Non-organic fabric can be bleached, dyed or treated with chemicals that can be toxic. The mattress should specifically say 100% organic. Otherwise, it would still have toxic chemicals and treatment done for some part of the mattress. Look for organic crib mattresses with Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) stamp. Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) stamp is a third party certification. It tests for toxic chemicals in organic materials before manufacturing process.  It also tests that that organic material is processed without harmful chemicals during manufacturing. (More details here.) Green guard is a popular certification for testing VOCs in mattress. However, Green guard testing is very limiting. It does not measure heavy metals, PVC or phthalates (except in the Children and Schools certification). It also doesn’t look at the production of the fabric. (More details here.)

Mattress Inside Filling Material – Organic cotton, organic wool and organic coconut coir is healthy alternative to toxic Polyurethane foam.

Mattress Cover or Padding –  Some manufacturers use wool to pass fire standards required by law. Wool is a natural fire retardant so it does not need toxic fire retardant chemicals added. However, watch out for some companies that add chemicals to boost wool’s fire resistance. Wool, organic cotton and natural latex (not synthetic latex) are a natural materials for crib mattress covering.  However, crib mattresses with these covers will not be water-proof.  Synthetic latex, sometimes called latex is made of petroleum, not from the rubber tree so it’s not a natural material. Also, for small percentage of babies are allergic to wool. Therefore, you may want to avoid wool if your baby has a wool allergy.  If you want a water-proof cover, you can look for a mattress with a food grade  polyethylene plastic cover. Food grade  polyethylene is non-toxic.
