Non Toxic Baby Dolls/ Organic Baby Dolls – Non-Toxic, PVC-Free, Vinyl-Free, Phthalate-Free Baby Dolls
Now that my daughter is one year old, I thought it would be a good idea to get her a baby doll. A doll would be a fun, educational toy for her. However, when I was ready to pick one up, I wondered if any of the materials of the doll could be toxic to my daughter. If it is made of plastic, it probably is, right? Should I look for an organic baby doll? If you want to buy a plastic doll, you will find that many baby dolls are made of vinyl, also known as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Unfortunately, PVC is a very dangerous material. PVC is a rigid plastic and plasticizers are used to make the plastic soft and flexible. Most common plasticizers used for PVC are phthalates. Phthalates are linked to have negative health effects such as birth defects, neurodevelopmental problems in newborns, cancer, obesity, fertility issues, etc.
There are also dolls that are made from phthalate-free pvc. However, PVC materials will still leach other harmful chemicals. In addition to phthalates, PVC is also made from vinyl chloride and other bad chemicals such as heavy metals, dioxins, etc, which are human carcinogen. PVC is the most toxic plastic and it has toxicity from a manufacturing stage to a consumer stage to a disposal stage. PVC material leaches toxic chemicals over time from the products. Those toxic chemicals can be inhaled or get absorbed through skin contact. The only way to avoid dangerous chemicals from PVC is to find 100% PVC free dolls. Safe alternative to a vinyl doll is to get a rag doll instead. You can also find some rag dolls that are made from 100% organic materials.
However, if you must get a plastic baby doll, you can look into a doll that is made from phthalate-free PVC material. It is not completely safe but certainly it wouldn’t have toxins from phthalates. Phthalate-free pvc would probably still have other chemicals that is toxic. Therefore, if you purchase a doll that is made from phthalate-free PVC, try to air out the doll as much as possible. I have listed organic baby dolls made from organic materials, PVC free dolls and Phthalate-free pvc (phthalate-free vinyl) dolls below.

It the regular size Puppa doll (Milena) from Kathe Kruse phthalate-free? Or is it just the Puppa Rose? I can’t find the info anywhere! Thank you!
Hi, all of their dolls including Puppa doll Milena and Puppa doll Rose are phthalate-free. The company says this about their dolls and phthalates.
All PVC used by the Käthe Kruse company is mixed and processed with the non-phthalate plasticizer Hexamoll® DINCH by BASF. A current eco-efficiency analysis confirmed that Hexamoll® DlNCH has the best test results among the five most important non-phthalate plasticizers on the market. That makes BASF´s Hexamoll® DINCH the product with the lowest environmental impact from production to disposal.
This is good information, thank you.
i am looking for this quality but an asian looking doll for my 3 year old granddaughter. do you know of any?
Hi Lili,
I know Miniland makes ethnic dolls including Asian girl and boy.
Their dolls are designed in the US and made in Spain from BPA-free, phthalate-free vinyl. The dolls are also anatomically correct. Here are some links for their asian dolls.
Miniland Asian Girl
Miniland Asian Baby Girl
Miniland Asian Boy
Miniland Asian Baby Boy
I hope this helps! 🙂
Great post. Thanks putting this together. Miniland dolls have a scent so I prefer not to pursue it as it may contain harmful elements so I was considering JC Toys instead. I would like an anatomically correct doll but it seems they are all vinyl. Any recommendations? Thoughts?
Hi Rita,
Thank you! BTW sorry for a late reply. Unless dolls are made of natural materials like cotton and wool, most dolls out there is made of vinyl. There are dolls made of phthalate-free vinyl, however, that doesn’t mean the dolls are made without any harmful chemicals. You have to keep in mind that phthalate-free vinyl is still a vinyl material. At least, these dolls do not have phthalates. Up to this day, I haven’t found any dolls that are not made of vinyl yet. If you want to avoid vinyl material, I suggest to go with dolls made of natural materials such as fabric. Haba is one brand that makes dolls with fabric. Hope this helps!
Hello, thank you for the information!
I am wondering about the vanilla smell of Corolle. It cannot be natural, but do you know how they do it, it is something really to worry about?
Hi Tatiana,
Thank you for your message. Corolle dolls are made of a phthalate-free PVC material. Therefore, it is still made of PVC. The most non toxic option would be 100% PVC doll such as Apple Park Organic Plush Baby or Haba First Baby Doll. However, if you must get a plastic doll, phthalate-free PVC doll will be a better option than conventional PVC dolls out there since it is free of toxic chemical phthalate. It is possible that some kind of chemicals are used for the vanilla scent. I have made inquiry to Corolle company to see what the vanilla scent is made of. Once I hear from them, I will let you know. Thank you!
Do you think Baby Stella is a really safe option for a baby doll? I don’t know much about polyethylene pellets or polyethylene sheet and I would appreciate your input.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Polyethylene is plastic material. Although plastic is not the ideal material compared to organic fabric materials, I do feel that Baby Stella is much safer than most dolls that are made from toxic PVC (vinyl) material. Polyethylene is one of the safer plastics.
Did you hear back from Corolle company about the dolls?
Hi Amrita,
Actually, they have never replied back to me. I have contacted them again.

I’m going eco-friendly in my family child care home. An issue I’m running into, is that most of the pvc free dolls I find, are caucasian and I’m required to show diversity in my dolls as part of my rating program. Do any of the above manufacturer’s use different skin tones for their dolls?
Hi Heather,
Although this is not PVC free, this is a phthalates-free vinyl doll.

I’m looking for 18″ dolls for my granddaughters that will be safe to use. What do you recommend? The dolls i see on your site are baby style, but I am looking for the little girl style.
Hi Linda,
If you want to avoid a vinyl material, I can recommend dolls below. However, they are not 18″ dolls.
Bonikka Tikiri Doll Katy Dark Brown Hair with Pink & Sea Green Dress
HABA Mali 12″ Soft Doll
Both Bonikka Dolls and Haba Dolls offer different colored hair and eyes you can choose from.
Hope this helps!
Thank you for this research! It’s hard to come by. I see you have a few links to Asian dolls which I appreciate, but frankly, they’re not as cute as some of the other “toxic” ones (although I realize that cute is in the eye of the beholder!). Have you added to your research at all? I’ve been looking all over the internet for a safe doll for my Korean granddaughter.
Hi Maria,
If you want to avoid a vinyl material, I can recommend dolls below.
Both Bonikka Dolls and Haba Dolls offer different colored hair and eyes you can choose from.
Bonikka Dolls Tammy Lu Plush rag Doll
HABA Boy Doll Steven 15″ Soft Doll with Dark Hair, Grey Eyes and Freckles

Do you know anything about the safety of reborn baby dolls. They claim that they are made of vinyl silicone. I would like to get a very realistic looking baby doll for my 14-year-old daughter that has down syndrome. She wants desperately wants a real baby. If you have any safety information on these brands that look very real I would appreciate it.
Hi Kimberly,
If a doll is made from mixtures of silicone and vinyl, I don’t think it is safe since vinyl contains toxic carcinogens. You may want to confirm with a manufacturer that their doll materials don’t include vinyl. Hope this helps!
Hey there! I simply would like to give you a huge thumbs up for your excellent information you’ve got here on this post. I am coming back to your web site for more soon.|
