Non Toxic Baby Dolls/ Organic Baby Dolls – Non-Toxic, PVC-Free, Vinyl-Free, Phthalate-Free Baby Dolls

Now that my daughter is one year old, I thought it would be a good idea to get her a baby doll. A doll would be a fun, educational toy for her. However, when I was ready to pick one up, I wondered if any of the materials of the doll could be toxic to my daughter. If it is made of plastic, it probably is, right? Should I look for an organic baby doll?  If you want to buy a plastic doll, you will find that many baby dolls are made of vinyl, also known as polyvinyl chloride (PVC).  Unfortunately, PVC is a very dangerous material. PVC is a rigid plastic and plasticizers are used to make the plastic soft and flexible. Most common plasticizers used for PVC are phthalates. Phthalates are linked to have negative health effects such as birth defects, neurodevelopmental problems in newborns, cancer, obesity, fertility issues, etc.

There are also dolls that are made from phthalate-free pvc. However, PVC materials will still leach other harmful chemicals.  In addition to phthalates, PVC is also made from vinyl chloride and other bad chemicals such as heavy metals, dioxins, etc, which are human carcinogen.  PVC is the most toxic plastic and it has toxicity from a manufacturing stage to a consumer stage to a disposal stage. PVC material leaches toxic chemicals over time from the products. Those toxic chemicals can be inhaled or get absorbed through skin contact. The only way to avoid dangerous chemicals from PVC is to find 100% PVC free dolls. Safe alternative to a vinyl doll is to get a rag doll instead. You can also find some rag dolls that are made from 100% organic materials.

However, if you must get a plastic baby doll, you can look into a doll that is made from phthalate-free PVC material. It is not completely safe but certainly it wouldn’t have toxins from phthalates. Phthalate-free pvc would probably still have other chemicals that is toxic.  Therefore, if you purchase a doll that is made from phthalate-free PVC,  try to air out the doll as much as possible.  I have listed organic baby dolls made from organic materials, PVC free dolls and Phthalate-free pvc (phthalate-free vinyl) dolls below.
