Non-toxic baby wipes will have no toxic ingredients that can be harmful to your baby. Just because the baby wipes says ‘hypoallergenic’ ‘gentle’ or ‘sensitive’, that doesn’t the baby wipes don’t contain bad ingredients. The only way to really find out is to read the ingredient list and decide for yourself. Most of the wipes contain some kind of preservatives to prevent mold, penetration enhancers to help skin absorb the product easily, or surfactant to clean or reduce the surface tension of water making it easier to remove material. On top of that fragrance or some type of scent is added to make baby wipes smell nice.  Some baby wipes also use fragrance agents to mask other smells.

There are two things you should look at when buying baby wipes. First you should make sure no toxic ingredients are included with the baby wipe you are buying. There are dozens of toxic ingredients to avoid in baby wipes such as perfume, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), triclosan, etc. You can see the full list here on my previous posting.

Second, you should also ensure if the fabric material for the baby wipes are safe. Baby wipes are commonly made of non-woven fabrics. Non-woven fabrics for baby wipes include organic cotton, cotton, rayon or plastic resins such as polyester, polyethylene, and polypropylene. Certified organic cotton will be the best option. Fabric that is biodegradable would be a better option than a non-biodegradable fabric. Plastic resins such polyester or polypropylene are not biodegradable. Also, all plastics, even BPA-free plastics leach hormone-disrupting chemicals according to the University of Texas published the study. Therefore, it’s better to avoid plastic blend material if possible.

I have listed the best non-toxic baby wipes that I like below. My favorites are Joonya Baby Wipes and Jackson Reese Herbal Baby Wipes. I have listed each product’s ingredients, fabric material and EWG’s Skin Deep score. EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database has online profiles for cosmetics and personal care products and their potential hazards and health concerns. It contains ingredients in 70,992 products, 2099 brands. Potential hazards are scored from 1 to 10, hazard score 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. They rate each ingredient in the product and also give an overall score to the product. They are a reputable, reliable organization that you can check the safety of the product.

Water Wipes – Non-Toxic Baby Wipes

Water Wipes are called “the world’s purest wipes,” since they contain nothing but water and grapefruit seed extract. However, there is some contamination concern with its grapefruit extract. EWG’s Skin Deep says a grapefruit extract may have multiple, additive exposure sources, therefore, there are contamination concerns of  benzethonium chloride, methrylparaben or triclosan. However, the president of the company said they have done an independent testing and they’ve found no benzethonium chloride, methrylparaben or triclosan in their grapefruit extract. Overall, Water Wipes is rated 1 on EWG’s Skin Deep which is the best score fore safety.

Natracare Organic Cotton Baby Wipes

Natracare Organic Cotton Baby Wipes have the best fabric material, certified organic cotton. They are infused with organic essential oils of chamomile, apricot and sweet almond oil as well as natural plant extracts. One of their ingredients is parfum (highlighted below). Usually, parfum is to be avoided as an ingredient for non-toxic baby wipes because it is composed of many synthetic chemicals. Synthetic parfum (fragrance) has tons of chemicals mixed together and manufacturers are not required to list these ingredients of parfum. Often parfum (fragrance) contains phthalate which is highly toxic. Therefore, parfum has high score of 8 at EWG’s Skin Deep database (high hazard). However, Natracare uses natural scent derived from natural components, not from synthetic chemicals. (organic apricot, organic chamomile and organic linden oils) Therefore, it is safe. Also, potassium solbate is used as a preservative in these wipes. Potassium sorbate scores 3 on EWG’s Skin Deep. It is one of the safer preservative used in  baby wipes. This chemical may cause allergies or organ system toxicity (non-reproductive). However, there are limited evidence to prove organ system toxicity as of now.  Natracare Organic Cotton Baby Wipes are manufactured in Greece.
