Cruelty Free Cosmetics
Cruelty free is a label for products that don’t do test on animals. In cosmetics, rabbits, mice, rats and guinea pigs (usually rabbits and mice) are often tested for toxicity and allergies. Bunnies are locked in so he is unable to move, then eyelids are also hold open and cosmetic ingredient is dripped in his eyes in Draize eye test. In Draize skin test, bunnies’s skin is shaved and chemical is applied to see the reaction. This is done without any pain relief before, during or after the test. Rabbits, mice, rats and guinea pigs are also forced-fed cosmetic ingredients to see if the ingredients are toxic.
In cruelty free products, ideally, the products and their ingredients are not tested on animals at all. However, ‘cruelty free; is not clearly defined by law. Therefore, it is hard for consumers to really see what products are really ‘cruelty free’. A manufacturer may not test on animals but their products’ ingredient may have been tested on animals by someone long time ago. The manufacturer may not test their products on animals but their ingredients may be tested on animals in overseas. Many raw materials, used in cosmetics, were tested on animals years ago. A manufacturer may only use those ingredients and call their product ‘cruelty free’ since they are not testing on animals now. There is no clear definition what ‘cruelty free’ really is.
Here is how you can be confident that you are actually buying a ‘cruelty free’ product. You can look for a cruelty free certification on make up products you are buying. There is a cruelty free certification program called, ‘Leaping Bunny‘. In ‘Leaping Bunny’ program, the products and their ingredients are not tested on animals at any stages of product development. PETA also has a certification program called ‘Beauty Without Bunnies‘. There is also vegan certification by Vegan.org for the products that do not contain animal products or byproducts and that have not been tested on animals. In addition, go for a product that is made from natural or organic ingredients. Cosmetics contain lots of synthetic chemicals that needs to be tested on animals especially if the ingredients are new. Often, synthetic chemicals are harmful and toxic so animal testings are needed for assurance of safety. Many synthetic chemicals are also bad for our natural environment and our health.
