Which Umbrella Stroller Is the Best?

I got a good idea about which strollers are non toxic through my research for my previous post ‘Non Toxic Strollers Without Flame Retardant Chemicals‘. I talked about non toxic strollers without any flame retardant chemicals and other harmful materials. However, I needed to dig a little deeper to find an umbrella stroller that is not only non toxic but also comfortable for me and my baby.  I didn’t want to spend too much for the stroller either since my daughter doesn’t use a stroller that much these days.  In this post, I share with you what I found out about each non toxic umbrella stroller and which non toxic umbrella stroller is the best.

The Best Umbrella Stroller Criteria

Non toxic materials

Baby strollers can contain toxic flame retardant chemicals. Therefore, I emailed all the stroller manufacturers and made sure their strollers are not treated with flame retardant chemicals. Most strollers use polyurethane foam in the seat padding or wheels, polyester as their fabric and PVC as their rain cover material. It is hard to find a stroller that does not use polyurethane foam, polyester and pvc (in the rain cover). Therefore, any better alternative materials will be a plus.

Light and compact

The reason parents get an umbrella stroller is to get a stroller much lighter and compact than their full-sized stroller.  Some purchase an umbrella stroller for traveling. Therefore, how light and compact the stroller is very important. If you are purchasing an umbrella stroller for traveling, how small it folds and how you can carry on a plane will be also a deciding factor when choosing an umbrella stroller.

Easy folding and unfolding

Easy folding and unfolding is important not just for an umbrella stroller but for all strollers.  Often, you will have to place a stroller in the trunk of the car when you drive. Sometimes, you will have to fold a stroller and carry it with you when you travel. When you do folding and unfolding actions at these times, you don’t want to struggle doing them.

Big canopy to cover the sun

So many times I was glad that my UPPAbaby Cruz had a big canopy.  Big canopy is essential to protect your baby from the sun.  It also gives privacy when baby is sleeping.

Maneuvers well

An umbrella stroller is supposed to be light, therefore, everything is compact including the wheels. Smaller wheels combined with the weight of a baby or toddler sometimes makes a stroller not maneuver well. The best way to know is to have your baby sit in the stroller and try walking with it.  In general, foam or air-filled rubber tires offers better maneuverability than plastic wheels. Foam-filled tires (Never go flat) can be filled with EVA foam or Polyurethane foam. Also, all wheel suspension makes the ride more smooth for your baby than front or rear wheel suspension.

Comfortable seat (adjustable seat recline)

You want a stroller seat to be comfortable for your baby.  Sometimes a baby or a toddler falls asleep in the stroller. When this happens, you want to be able to make the seat recline close to a flat position to make it more comfortable.

One Handle

This is more about personal preference. I often have to push the stroller with one hand since I walk my dog with a stroller.  I found that one handle is much easier to maneuver with one hand than two handles. Some strollers with two handles were impossible for me to maneuver (especially when making turns) with one hand when baby was sitting in the stroller.

Storage Basket

Storage basket is an important feature. I used the basket in my UPPAbaby Cruz stroller so many times with groceries, a diaper bag or anything I had to carry. The larger basket, the better it is!  However, since an umbrella stroller is compact in size, the basket underneath will be much smaller than a full size stroller.  You want the basket to be able to store at least a small diaper bag or essential items and be easily accessible from the back.

Weight Capacity

Since an umbrella stroller is used by many toddlers, the more weight capacity, the better it is. Most of the umbrella strollers are capable of carrying a baby from 3 or 6 month old to 40-50lbs. If you require a stroller to accommodate a new born, Baby Zen Yoyo + can be used from newborn to 40 lbs.

Pros: Mountain Buggy Nano is pretty good overall. It is light and comfy for the baby.

Cons: I wish that canopy is bigger. Also, when canopy is folded, it covers the handle.  I still liked this stroller despite the canopy issue, however, my husband didn’t like canopy problem at all. Cons: Its Canopy is not big enough. There is also no peekaboo window. This  stroller also has two handles so if you have to  maneuver with one hand, it won’t be easy.  I also don’t like PVC material  in the foot rest.

My Thoughts On These Strollers

Although all of these strollers are umbrella strollers, they are all a little different from each other. Therefore, the best stroller may be different for each individual depending on her/his needs. Some parents may want to get the lightest and the most compact umbrella stroller because they are using the stroller for traveling.  Some parents just want to switch to a lighter stroller from their full-size stroller for everyday use so size or weight may not be the most important feature they are looking for. Instead, they may focus more on a stroller that maneuvers well and has a comfortable seat. Parents also have to consider if they will be using the stroller on a flat surface such as street pavement (or indoor mall) or outdoors such as grass since some wheels are limited in places they can go. Therefore, figuring out first why you are buying an umbrella stroller will be a good idea.  That will help you decide which stroller is right for you and your baby.

After testing all the strollers, in my opinion, UPPAbaby Minu is the best everyday use umbrella stroller over all. It maneuvers very well, has a comfortable seat, a big canopy with a peekaboo window and a good storage basket. It is also easily moved with one hand. Strolling with Minu is easy and smooth. It is not the lightest or most compact stroller but still very light and compact. Easy one hand folding and unfolding is also an attractive feature. The only downside is it is pricy compared to other umbrella strollers out there.

I also like Baby Zen Yoyo +.  It is super light and compact, and great for traveling. It also maneuvers very well, fold & unfold with one hand very easily. You can use this umbrella stroller with a newborn. For a very light stroller, it doesn’t feel flimsy but pretty sturdy. However, again, this stroller is pricier than other strollers out there.

I also like Zoe stroller. Zoe stroller is more affordable than the UPPAbaby Minu or Baby Zen Yoyo + stroller. This is super light &  compact and has easy one hand fold & unfold feature. It has all the attractive features such as a huge canopy, adjustable backrest and decent size storage basket. It also comes with cool accessories such as a cup holder and a snack cup for a toddler, a cup holder for a  parent and a belly bar. It is also one of the most non-toxic strollers available with no polyurethane foam anywhere in the stroller. In addition, Zoe stroller offers a life time guarantee on their wheels. They will replace them at no cost if they break. However, Zoe stroller is not made for all-terrain use so I advise you not to use this stroller on grass, sand, or uneven terrain. Therefore, if you plan to use an umbrella stroller on the surface other than the street pavement or mall, Zoe stroller may not be right for you.

For my daughter, I have chosen a Baby Jogger City Tour stroller. Baby Jogger is light and compact.  You can do folding and unfolding with one hand and it folds to a very compact size. City Tour maneuvers very well, even with one hand. I contemplated selecting an umbrella stroller between Baby Jogger City Tour, Zoe stroller XL1 Best V2 and UppaBaby Minu.  I didn’t pick Zoe stroller since I needed a stroller that maneuvers better. I found Baby Jogger City Tour maneuvers more smoothly than the Zoe stroller did.  Overall, UPPAbaby Minu seemed to have better quality and features. However, we don’t use a stroller that much these days since my daughter would rather walk a lot of times when we go out. Therefore, I didn’t want to spend too much on a stroller this time around. Plus, my daughter liked a City tour stroller every time we tried having her sit in there. So far it has been working out great and I am happy with it. I will be writing a review on this stroller later. (Read my review on Baby Jogger City Tour Umbrella Stroller)

So these are my thoughts on the strollers. Hopefully, my post helps you decide the best umbrella stroller for you and your baby!
