STEM Toys – Enhance Child’s Creativity, Curiosity With STEM Toys, Educational Toys, Creative Toys
When my daughter became a kindergartener, I could see that she required more creative, sophisticated toys compared to her earlier years. I could see that she was more curious, more engaged and more eager to experience and learn new things. She was really captivated with creating, building, making, and crafting things. She also wanted to experiment and learn new things. When she made this leap, I was caught a little bit off-guard playing the same way with her and found myself trying to catch up with her. Therefore, I decided to research toys that can help her explore her creativity and curiosity. I always write about non toxic, organic, natural, eco-friendly products including toys but this post is more about toys that can ignite, develop and nurture creativity and curiosity rather than focusing on materials and ingredients of the toys. I listed these toys so I can share with parents that there are educational toys like these available. I am planning to get some of these products in this post for my daughter this Christmas. In this post, I share with you what STEM learning is and what type of toys may help children with skills such as creativity, curiosity, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
The 4th Industrial Revolution
Nobody knows exactly how our lives will evolve to in 10-20 years. Our daily life in the future would most likely to be more technologically advanced. My daughter may live in a generation where a robot cooks dinner for her rather than her cooking and she may never have to get a driver’s license due to autonomous driving. She will live in a time that is totally different than right now just like our generation live in a different technological environment than our grandparents. In the future that is more digitalized, automated, connected and faster, my daughter will see the development of the 4th industrial revolution like artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), 3D printing, blockchain, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), genetic engineering, quantum computing, and other technologies. In the 4th industrial revolution, 21st century skills such as complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, judgement and decision making, people management, coordinating with others, emotional intelligence, service orientation, negotiation, cognitive flexibility are needed. However, in the 4th industrial revolution, human creativity is especially important. According to The World Economic Forum, Deloitte, and McKinsey, creativity is in the top skills needed to survive the 4th Industrial Revolution. Human creativity involves critical thinking and creative problem-solving. These skills are especially important and essential because they can not be automated. Creative thinking generates original ideas and unique ways of solving problems. Creative problem-solving solves issues that have numerous possible solutions and decide the best solution. According to the World Economic Forum, science, technology, engineering and math are crucial to our future and resetting the way we teach science is vital for all our future. They said that science has tangible, practical, and immediate applications for our daily lives. For example, Covid-19 is not something only limited people such as scientists deal with. It is something people in the world collectively try to understand, figure out and deal with. After this Pandemic crisis, we don’t know what kind of crisis may happen in the future. Climate change and global warming may be one of them. The World Economic Forum emphasizes that we should prepare our children to challenge and address next global challenges. In addition, up to 65% of children entering school today will have a job that does not yet exist. Therefore, our children must develop for future professions that don’t yet exist. Teaching science, technology, engineering and math skills for the real world is crucial, and education shouldn’t just be about transferring explicit knowledge to our next generation. According to the OECD 2030 Future of Education and Skills Project,
“We need to replace old education standards with an educational framework that combines knowledge with the 21st century skills of creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration.”
The World Economic Forum said about this as follows.
“This is achieved by radically transforming the way we teach and learn science and technology skills from one-way content dissemination and memorization to personalized, self-directed learning. In a rapidly changing world, where we cannot predict what technologies will be ascendant in the future, we have to teach children to teach themselves. Students need not just knowledge, but also skills, attitudes and values to thrive in and shape their own future for a more empowered global citizenship. This has never been more evident than in the current pandemic.”
This is where STEM education come in. The World Economic Forum says that STEM skills must be included in the basic definition of literacy for our children to prepare them for the future.
What is STEM Education?
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM learning is based on these four subjects. In STEM education, students learn to draws knowledge from the combination of all four disciplines and solve problems in real world applications. STEM learning is a new way of learning which is different from the old way of learning such as memorizing academic knowledge. According to the Accelerated Pathways who helps students build a customized college plan designed to get a degree for a career in STEM , students in STEM learning will often be required to use what they already know to figure out the right answer for themselves using creativity, flexible thinking, technical knowledge and problem solving skills. STEM learning involves projects and activities often using modern technology that are used in practical applications of science. When you hear science, technology, engineering and mathematics, you may think that a person who is successful in STEM learning must be analytical. However, STEM is much more than that. STEM education is about developing and utilizing one’s creativity, flexibility, critical thinking skills, decision making skills to solve a problem. STEM students learn how to think and make decisions for themselves. There is also STEAM education which integrates Arts (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) to add the critical process of creativity and innovation component.
STEM Learning For Early Childhood
According to the Early Childhood STEM Working Group, research has found that children from different socio-economic backgrounds enter kindergarten with large differences in math and science knowledge, and that these differences tend to grow over time. They said that intentional inclusion of STEM experiences in early childhood can prevent this early learning gaps in STEM areas. Also, according to the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop New America, research shows that math knowledge in preschool predicts math achievement even into the high school years, preschool math skills predict later academic achievement more consistently than early reading or attention skills. Research also shows that children who engage in scientific activities from an early age develop positive attitudes toward science. Early STEM experiences can spark interest in STEM and also give confidence that they can do STEM. Therefore, they are more likely to pursue STEM expertise and careers later on.
STEM activities can build a child’s interest in science, technology, engineering and math and help them be curious, creative, and technology-friendly. It can also help them inquire, focus, communicate, innovate and learn how things work together. By children planting in a community garden, they learn fundamental concepts about science and the natural world such as how much water is needed, what roots are for, how a plant’s growth changes with the seasons, and so on. This is an introduction to environmental science and plant biology, critical thinking skills, problem solving, and trial and error. Children like to build, take things apart, and put them back together, collect items and organize their collections as play. They are naturally curious, want to find out how things work, explore and understand. With STEM activities, they can make inquiries and investigate how the world works. All young children have the capacity to learn and do STEM according to the Community for Advancing Discovery Research in Education. Also according to a report by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop New America, young children are actually quite capable and they can make observations and predictions, carry out simple experiments and investigations, collect data, and begin to make sense of what they found.

Final Thoughts
During research of STEM toys for this post, I have already gotten her some toys from the list. She really loves playing chess, enjoyed making a terrarium, digging shark teeth fossils, painting rocks. She was so excited and engaged to do these activities. She asked me, ‘what’s the next project?’ She really had fun and wanted more. Now that Christmas is coming soon, I can’t wait to getting more STEM toys for her. I got her a coding computer game for 5 years old children not too long ago, I was surprised to see her enjoying the concept of coding. I think she will really love building and coding a robot toy. STEM toys are projects or activity based and they are engaging. I think children love to find out new things around us. How fun and exciting it is to dig for real fossils such as dinosaur bones or do experiments like a real scientist! Science, technology, engineering and mathematics are not difficult or intimidating subjects and they can be found all around us in real life situations. STEM activities are actually activities that young kids naturally enjoy doing such as building, making, digging, putting things apart or together, mixing, etc. Early STEM experiences can spark interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and also give young kids confidence that they can do STEM. STEM learning can help children develop creative problem solving skills using what they know and what they can find out and coming up with the best solution for real life challenges.
